Unlike a broken bone, an injured brain is never the same. When individuals sustain a brain injury, they can experience cognitive, physical and behavioral changes.
Loss of memory, vision, communication and mobility are common, as are personality changes.

Brain injuries dramatically impact the lives of people who sustain the injuries. . .

- Brain Injury Association of New York State

Erika’s Kirtoglou’s life changed forever on August 15, 1993. On that day, she was in a devastating car crash that left her with traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Although she has undergone extensive rehabilitation as a result of her injury, the professionals who have worked with her describe her recovery as atypical, amazing and unexplainable. Many have added that her continued progress is miraculous, and she has surpassed the expectations of everyone involved in her recovery, including her parents.

Regaining most of her functions, including the ability to drive, Erika also earned both a BA and MA in English, honing the writing skills that have allowed her to tell her inspirational story.
